Filmmakers Abel Sanchez Jr. (a San Francisco-area musician) and Andres Alegria describe their ode to the legendary United Farm Workers labor leader and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez as a 15-year labor of love. Song for Cesar takes a musical approach to his life, tracing Chavez’s rise from his days as a jazz and blues-loving pachuco youth to the leader of a movement that inspired musicians and other artists as well as laborers. It includes revealing interviews with several heavyweights — fellow activist Delores Huerta, Carlos Santana, Joan Baez, Maya Angelou — and culminates with a studio performance of the title song, which Sanchez wrote with the late Jorge Santana. This special presentation is part of the El Paso Community Foundation Plaza Classic Film Festival’s contribution to the County of El Paso’s Month of Unity in Healing commemorating the second anniversary of the racially motivated mass shooting in El Paso. It culminates with the unveiling of the Healing Garden in Ascarate Park on August 3.
