Three pillars of Mexico’s Golden Age join forces for Sombra Verde (Green Shadow): director Roberto Gavaldón and producers Pedro and Guillermo Calderón. The Calderón brothers, with roots in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, persuaded Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born MGM star, to return to his homeland, where he had made several films before achieving his Hollywood stardom. Shot partially on location in Veracruz, Sombra Verde centers on a scientist (Montalban) sent into the rainforest to find native plants to make cortisone. Losing his way, he stumbles into a natural paradise ruled by a murderous plantation owner and his alluring daughter. Preserved by Viviana García Besné’s Permanencia Voluntaria, an archive dedicated to classic Mexican cinema, Sombra Verde was featured in April at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
