When audiences think of the hero’s journey, as described by folklorist Joseph Campbell, figures from Greek mythology such as Odysseus and Prometheus come to mind. Not a swamp-loving ogre. But Shrek — the title character is voiced by Mike Myers in this DreamWorks standout — also should be included in this conversation. His trek to rescue Princess Fiona (a fellow ogre) and save his swamp are the quintessential hero’s journey, in which the most important thing he gains may be insight into his own character. Featuring great comic moments from sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Prince Charming (John Lithgow), this postmodern fairy tale references many beloved children’s classics and also asks us to look more critically at the messages these stories give us about what we should seek in order to live happily ever after.
