Inspired by their own experiences as a white gay couple in Los Angeles’ Echo Park, writer-directors Glatzer and Westmoreland tell the coming-of-age story of a 14-year-old Latina, Magdalena’s (Rios), whose world turns upside down when she discovers she is pregnant, causing her ouster from her heavily Christian home – all while in the middle of trying to prepare for her 15th birthday celebration. She is taken in by a grand-uncle (Gonzalez) and an often-in-trouble gay cousin Carlos (Garcia) who is having an affair with one of his landlords. Magdalena is driving by her need to regain favor with her family and commemorate her transition to adulthood through the traditional quinceañera celebration. Quinceanera won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was made for $400,000, with a lot of support from neighbors of the writer-directors. — Jaime Mendez
