Canadian-born, England-based animator Richard Williams, who won an Academy Award for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, toiled 31 years on what he envisioned as his animated masterpiece, The Thief and the Cobbler, only to have it taken away and chopped up into something else that capitalized on Disney’s Aladdin. Filmmaker Kevin Schreck pieces together archival footage and contemporary interviews with animators who worked on it (Williams did not participate) to create an empathetic, tragic story about vision, vanity and what happens when artistic obsession and commerce clash. It features some of the most dazzling animation you’ll ever see. A workprint of The Thief and the Cobbler was shown at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2013.
