The word “musical” conjures images of massive production numbers and people breaking into song in the street. In this inventive, low-budget, alternative romantic musical by Ireland’s John Carney (Sing Street), the songs are performed in believable, sometimes inventive settings (Marketa Irglova sings If You Want Me as she listens to it on headphones while taking a walk). The songs are really good, especially Glen Hansard and Irglova’s lovely, Oscar-winning Falling Slowly. Hansard (the former Frames frontman who opened for Eddie Vedder at the Plaza Theatre in 2012) plays Guy, who is reeling from a breakup. He meets Girl (Irglova), a Czech immigrant. Musical and romantic bonds blossom, with a surprising twist. It inspired the Tony Award-winning musical of the same name.
