Gene Kelly and fellow choreographer Stanley Donen (who died Feb. 21) took on their first directing job with this musical favorite from MGM. Kelly is joined by Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin as three young sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City. The trio sets out to take the city by storm in just one day. They are joined by Ann Miller, Betty Garrett and Vera Ellen for an evening of adventure and some dazzling song and dance. Kelly and Donen both wanted to shoot the film on location in Manhattan, but the studio only allowed them one week in the city. The result was the iconic musical number New York, New York. This film was cited as one of the movies that influenced La La Land (which closes PCFF 2019), particularly in terms of location as a character.
