Bette Davis gives one of her most iconic performances in this ultimate makeover movie. Davis is Charlotte, the spinster young woman repressed from years of emotional abuse from her possessive mother (a chilling Gladys Cooper). With the help of a brilliant psychiatrist (the wonderful Claude Rains), Charlotte is transformed into a beautiful, though still insecure woman of the world. Paul Henreid plays Jerry, the unhappily married man who offers Charlotte her first experience of true love aboard a South American cruise. Jack Warner bought the original novel by Olive Higgins Prouty as a possible vehicle for Irene Dunne. When Davis got word of this, she immediately went to Warner and insisted the role was hers. The result is one of the most beloved films of her extraordinary career.
