Night of the living dead

Released in 1968, Night of the Living Dead was the brainchild of George Romero, who co-wrote, directed and edited the film. The low-budget cult classic was shot in black-and-white for around $120,000. It opens with a woman (Judith O’Dea) and her brother being attacked in a cemetery by zombies. She finds refuge in a farm house, where much of the story takes place. What began as a sort of horror-comedy project turned into something terrifying. Tame by today’s standards, initial audiences were shocked by its violence and gravity. NOTLD has had a profound influence on zombie and horror movies that followed. But it also played a role in the racial discussion during the Civil Rights era, given what happens to the hero, Ben (Duane Jones), who is African American. Pauline Kael called it, “one of the most gruesomely terrifying movies ever made.”
