Christian Bale may loathe his lead role as Jack “Cowboy” Kelly, but this film has found an enduring audience, affectionately known as “fansies,” despite its poor box-office performance during its initial release. The plot is centered on the newspaper delivery strikes and unionizing that took place in New York around 1899. Newsies was directed by Kenny Ortega (who was the choreographer for Dirty Dancing, another film featured in this year’s festival) and features Robert Duvall as famed publisher Joseph Pulitzer (yes, that Pulitzer). It’s hard not to get fired up and ready to fight against journalistic empires after watching this earnest musical.
