Richard Dreyfuss earned his second Oscar nomination (he won the Academy Award for 1977’s The Goodbye Girl) for his unforgettable performance in this modern American classic. Dreyfuss plays Glenn Holland, a man who begrudgingly takes a job teaching music at a high school in the 1960s while suppressing his dream of becoming a great composer. It is through teaching that Mr. Holland finds his greatest fulfillment. The late, great character actress Glenne Headly had one of her greatest roles as Glenn’s loyal wife. The film also has one of the great soundtracks, with music ranging from Mozart to Gershwin to John Lennon.
