This classic version of the “beauty and the beast” theme, presented in its complete, unexpurgated form, was technically unsurpassed in pacing, setting, atmosphere and the superb special effects by Willis H. O’Brien. Even the acting perfectly captures the flavor of the 1930s; Fay Wray, a veteran of the silents, was among the first to be dubbed a “scream queen” for her performance. Max Steiner’s throbbing music score is memorable and among the first created for films. The final sequence atop the recently completed Empire State Building belongs to film folklore. One of the most famous films ever made and the granddaddy of all monster movies.
