Based on the life of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, this visually stunning dramatic film, directed by Academy Award-nominated director Julie Taymor, shows Kahlo’s art, life and tumultuous marriage to renowned Mexican painter Diego Rivera. The biopic begins in the 1920s with Kahlo the art student seeking advice from the already-famous Rivera, who was 20 years her senior. It recreates the tragic bus accident that broke Kahlo’s spinal column, collarbone, ribs, leg and foot. She survived but was confined to her bed, which propelled her into painting. The film won two Academy Awards — for Best Music Original Score and Best Makeup — and earned an Oscar nomination for Salma Hayek.
