The Truman Capote novella became an iconic 1961 film by director Blake Edwards and starring the iconic Audrey Hepburn and the lesser known George Peppard (later of TV’s The A Team). Capote’s book was darker, sadder, and the main character, Holly Golightly, more nebulous and edgy, though Capote said she was an American geisha, not a prostitute. The film, set in New York City, tells the timeless story of an emotionally lost young woman who meets a struggling young writer, and is built around the machinations of Holly trying to marry for money. Hepburn made Golightly into one of the most charming, beguiling and captivating characters in the movies. Other than the unfortunate Asian caricature foisted by Mickey Rooney, the film and its theme song Moon River are as timeless as its star, and gives us Hepburn at the apex of her skills and her powers to enchant.
