“Joliet” Jake and Elwood Blues are on a “mission from God” to save their childhood Catholic boarding school from foreclosure. Director John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places) brings together an all-star cast, including R&B greats Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Ray Charles, in this madcap adventure that follows the two ex-con musicians (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) on a cross-state journey with the intent to put the band back together to raise the money for the school. Along the way, they run into some sticky situations with Jake’s hell-bent ex-fiance (Carrie Fisher), a traveling honky-tonk band, and a group of Illinois Nazis. Based on a recurring Blues Brothers sketch from Saturday Night Live, the film showcases several memorable musical numbers from Franklin, Brown, Charles and Cab Calloway, in addition to some of the most spectacular car crash scenes on film. Talk about ’80s excess.
