Director Penny Marshall (1943-2018) enjoyed a big box-office success with her second directorial effort, making her the first female director whose films grossed more $100 million. Starring Tom Hanks as Josh, a 12-year-old boy who wishes to grow up, this film takes the “fish out of water” and “body swapping” premises (which were in vogue at the time) to funny and memorable moments by exploring what happens when an adolescent boy inhabits an adult’s body. It offers more than situational laughs, though. It encourages viewers to pursue mindfulness, enjoying the present moment while also retaining the playfulness and optimism of youth.
