After a four-year absence from the screen, Judy Garland made one of the greatest comebacks in movie history with this musical epic, the second incarnation of a story that resurfaced again with Barbra Streisand’s feminist take in 1976 and Bradley Cooper’s well-received 2018 adaptation. This one was personal for Garland, who plays Esther Blodgett, an enormously gifted singer on the rise. James Mason is the heavy-drinking movie actor who recognizes Esther’s talent and sets about making Esther a star. Both actors were nominated for Academy Awards for their moving performances. Featuring the Garland standard The Man That Got Away, this film is widely regarded as the best of the four versions of this quintessential Hollywood fable.
